b current

Diverse performance pieces, ideas, workshops, and mainstage productions

Suite: 251

For over 23 years, b current has produced outside of the box performance pieces, ideas, workshops, and mainstage productions. We splashed onto the scene in 1991, when ahdri zhina mandiela founded the company, and we brought to Toronto the first ever production of a Dub Theatre script, mandiela’s dark diaspora… in dub. The kinetic artistic energy from this fuelled our pioneer work feeding and shaping the future of Canadian performance art through culturally-rooted creation. Since inception, b current has developed scores of internationally celebrated artists and their works, with a focus always on engaging the community and creating space for diverse voices to be heard.

Not Far From The Tree

Puts Toronto’s fruit to good use by picking and sharing the bounty

When a homeowner can’t keep up with the abundant harvest produced by their tree, they let us know and we mobilize a team of volunteers to pick the bounty. The harvest is split three ways: 1/3 is offered to the tree owner, 1/3 is shared among the volunteers, and 1/3 is delivered by bicycle to local food banks, shelters, and community kitchens. It’s a win-win-win situation! With an incredible crew of volunteers, we’re making good use of healthy food, addressing climate change with hands-on community action, and building community by sharing the urban abundance.

Most recently, we have formed an international group of artists and scientists in the Nascent Art Science Collective. Melody in music greatly influences my work.

I work best in a team or group, despite the solitary nature of being a visual artist. I will often assume a leadership role in these groups. I am thrilled and delighted to be a Wychwood Barns artist and look forward greatly to making your acquaintance.
